Should Hiring Decisions Be Made by AI?

The process of recruiting and hiring qualified candidates has changed dramatically over the past few decades. It began when the internet introduced tools that didn’t exist before such as online job boards (e.g., Indeed and Zip Recruiter) and networking sites (e.g., LinkedIn). These technologies lowered the costs of recruiting while at the same time reaching a larger audience. And now we are on the brink of an even bigger step change because AI will completely change the landscape for what’s possible and at a previously unthinkable pace.

AI has the power to replace human decision-making. Think about that for a minute. AI can rapidly review resumes to search for skills and other basic requirements such as education and experience. The traditional approach of conducting face-to-face interviews can now be replaced with a ChatBot allowing engagement with potential candidates anywhere anytime 24/7. There are even opportunities for companies to use AI to collect copious amounts of private information about candidates.

And it’s not just companies who are ramping up their use of AI.  On the other side, job seekers have access to many of the same AI tools. For example, job seekers are increasingly using AI to look for openings, tailor cover letters and resumes to specific job descriptions using auto-filling and resume data populating tools, and even apply for jobs all on its own.  It’s almost like a battle of the bots between company and job seeker.

In this evolving landscape, how can we effectively leverage AI? One approach is to thoroughly understand its strengths and weaknesses. By capitalizing on its strengths and addressing its limitations, we can maximize its impact. For instance, AI excels at reviewing resumes and identifying candidates with essential skills, significantly reducing the time spent on manual screening. However, assessing a person’s aptitude or potential remains a challenge for AI. How can it identify individuals who may not have impressive resumes but possess the qualifications needed for the job?

At JPS, we advocate for a balanced approach. While AI plays a crucial role, the human element remains essential. Candidates should have the opportunity to showcase their abilities through realistic job simulations like COBRA. These simulations not only help candidates assess if the job is a good fit for them but also enable companies to identify talented individuals beyond what a resume reveals.
